Description

Red thread is a fungal disease that affects turfgrass and appears as irregular yellowish to brownish patches, accompanied by visible red, thread-like growths on the surface.

Family: Corticiaceae
Type: Fungal disease
Season of appearance: Spring and autumn

Causes

This fungus develops primarily in nutrient-deficient soils under cool, damp conditions. Lawns that are low in nitrogen are particularly susceptible to infection.

Prevention

  1. Water appropriately, avoiding prolonged excess moisture.
  2. Mow regularly using sharp mower blades.
  3. Promote good air circulation by preventing soil compaction.

Control

  1. Increase nitrogen fertilization to help the lawn recover.
  2. Improve drainage and avoid excess moisture.
  3. Overseed damaged areas if necessary.
