When to sow your lawn?

If you're reading this article, it's probably because you want to know when is the best time of the year to sow your lawn to get healthy-looking grass. Apart from its aesthetic appeal, a healthy lawn is useful to absorb water, prevent wind and water erosion, improve the biodegradation of synthetic organic compounds and buffer temperatures.

Before determining the best time to sow your lawn, you must know that Quebec is a very large province where the difference in climate can vary greatly from one region to another. The ideal time to sow your lawn will not be the same if you live in Gaspésie than if you live in Montreal.

However, there are some ideal conditions that promote the healthy growth of the lawn:

  • A flat and fertile land that is rich in organic compounds
  • Soil with a slightly acidic pH (6.0 to 6.5)
  • At least 6 hours of sunshine a day
  • A temperature between 15 and 22 ºC
  • Regular water intake

Before you start sowing the grass seeds, make sure there is no risk of freezing at night in your area. It is best to sow your lawn when the weather starts to get warmer (do not sow your lawn if the temperature does not reach a minimum of 8 degrees Celsius).

A little trick to know when to sow your lawn is to observe your environment. When dandelions begin to appear in spring, this is the perfect time to sow your seeds!

When is the best time to seed a lawn?

In general, the ideal times to sow grass are in the spring and fall (or late summer). In the spring, it is recommended to sow from mid-May (or when there is no risk of freezing on the ground) to mid-June, while in the summer it is best to do it between mid-August and mid-September.

However, depending on which region of Quebec you live in, these periods may vary. That's why we organized the ideal times to sow your lawn in relation to the different regions of Quebec.

What is the best time to sow a land in the Outaouais as well as in the Laval and Montreal regions?

The regions of Laval and Montreal have a warmer climate, which can work in favor of the growth of new lawns. Normally, during the spring in these areas, it is recommended sowing the lawn at the beginning of May.

In the summer, it is best to sow the land between mid-August and mid-September. However, since each year the temperatures vary a lot from one season to another, it is recommended following the changes of temperature and the arrival of the seasons. As mentioned above, be sure to check if the conditions are ideal for seeding.

As for regions in the south of Quebec, they have a drier climate so be sure to choose a mixture of grass seeds that includes all-purpose grass seeds since they are more resistant.

What is the best time to sow the lawn in Estrie and Montégerie?

The ideal times to seed your lawn in these areas are the same as those in Montreal. Regardless of whether you live in Boucherville, Longueuil or in a city in Estrie, the climate is very similar to that of Montreal so you can follow the advice from the previous paragraph.

What is the ideal time to plant your lawn in the regions of central Quebec?

The regions of central Quebec such as the Laurentians, Mauricie (Trois-Rivières, etc.), Chaudière-Appalaches, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Capitale-Nationale (Quebec City), Lanaudière and Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean generally have more fertile soils and a more favorable climate than other regions.

Normally, if the temperature follows the normal average temperature of the season, in spring you can sow your lawn in mid-May. However, if you prefer to do this during the summer, choose late August or early September.

When to sow grass seeds in the northern regions of Quebec?

The northern regions of Quebec such as Gaspésie, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Côte-Nord, and Nord-of-Québec are marked by a colder climate. This climate can be dry or humid depending on the region.

Since climatic conditions are less favorable in these areas and soils are less fertile, it is very important to choose the right seeds. Make sure to choose a more resistant seed. If you are unsure of the type of seed to buy, contact Vertdure and we will recommend the best products to use according to your needs and location.

Generally, during spring in these areas, it is recommended sowing the lawn between late May and early June while in the summer it is best to sow it before the end of August.
