Over time, soil compaction makes it harder for lawns to absorb the water, oxygen and nutrients they need to grow beautiful and healthy. Excessive fertilizing is the worst way to try to fix compaction, as it can actually make things even worse. A better option is to aerate your lawn in the fall, and sometimes the spring as well. If done annually, this will fully prevent soil compaction.
